STRONGSVILLE, Ohio - Jordan Bauth is scheduled to perform in the Jamestown Skating Academy's Ice Christmas on Sunday at the Jamestown Savings Bank Ice Arena.
The 12-year-old has some important work to tend to before then, however.
The Lancaster Middle School student, competing in the Intermediate Ladies, finds herself in fifth place after the short program at the U.S. Junior National Figure Skating Championships at the Hoover Arena. With the long program scheduled for this afternoon, Bauth hopes to climb up the leaderboard in the 20-person field.
"We were suprised because there are so many great skaters this year at the Intermediate level," JSA co-director Kirk Wyse said. "It's really a strong field."
Bauth's total score of 33.40 on Friday put her behind Katia Shpiband (37.81), Avery Kurtz (35.61), Hannah Miller (35.08) and Barbie Long (34.33).
"As planned, we had no idea about previous scores," said Wyse, who said Bauth was the last to skate. "We stayed back stage and she just had a great warmup and skated very well. When the marks came up we were so thrilled she was in fifth place.
"Intermediate is one of the largest divisions nationwide. There are probably 800 people who have competed at regionals to get to this point."
Bauth, who is making her second appeaerance at the Junior Nationals, will skate last again in this afternoon's long program before heading back to Jamestown in time to perform in Ice Christmas at 2 p.m., Sunday.
"It can be good," Wyse said of performing last. "It means that you're the last skater that the judges see, so it's freshest in their minds. But, it also means a long wait after the warmup. You could be waiting backstage for almost a half-hour. That's when the mind can start to wander.
"We're just hoping for her to do her work. She's been skating well in practice and her spirits are good."
On Thursday, Bauth placed fourth in the initial round in the Group B long program, finishing with 59.17 points.
"I just wanted to skate well," she said. "I felt really good about my skate."
Bauth is coached by Wyse, JSA co-director Lenel van den Berg and her mother, Suzanne.
"It's been a busy week for us," van den Berg said, "but that's a good thing."
