Local skater competes at Empire State Gamesby OBSERVER Staff Report Submitted Photo Fredonia resident Elizabeth Newell competes at the Empire State Games, held in Lake Placid, Feb. 20-22. 03/06/2009 - Elizabeth Newell, a senior at Fredonia High School, skated at the Empire State Games Feb. 20-22, in Lake Placid, placing third in the Senior Ladies Free skate. Newell trains at the Jamestown Savings Bank Ice Arena under the direction of co-directors Kirk Wyse and Lenel van den Berg of Chautauqua Ice. Newell has been skating since she was five years old and has competed at many local and regional events. Newell is a gold medalist with the United States Figure Skating Association and is presently ranked eighth in the region in the Senior Ladies division.
